The Windows 8 Store is broken

When Microsoft built Windows 8, it bet that it could create a Windows Store experience that would rival competitors like Apple and Google. The company was confident enough of its abilities in this sphere that it decided to lock Windows RT devices to purchases made within the Windows Store, and made WS-exclusive distribution a requirement for any Metro x86 products as well. We’ve been keeping an eye on the Windows Store since the OS launched — with the Christmas holidays upon us, and the two-month anniversary approaching, we’re circling back to investigate the status of the Store..

The blunt truth is that two months after launch, the Windows Store is still in rough shape. Some of this is due to a relatively small app selection, but that’s an inevitable problem for any company that launches a service like this. While it’s true that Microsoft can’t wave its hand and create apps from companies like Twitter and Facebook, there are steps the company could take to improve the Windows Store and help customers navigate the often-confusing application situation.

Better app curation

One of the real oddities of the Windows Store is how products for vastly different countries are slung together. I’m all for providing access to useful software across national boundaries, but this plays out very oddly given Microsoft’s minimal display options. Take a look at the Top free Government applications on November 19:

Of the 24 applications shown above, seven of them are Indian and five cover the UK, UAE, Malaysia, South Africa, and Sri Lanka. The “Mighty Presidents” app covers the leaders of just four countries (The US, Russia, France, and India), refers to Russia as the USSR, and is a word-for-word reprint of the Wikipedia entries for each president. The “TaxSoftware.com 2011″ app’s description is written in Engrish and contains a single review stating that it doesn’t work.

These sorts of oddities crop up in a number of categories. Sometimes user reviews and app ratings correspond with each other. Often, they don’t. Metro’s small text box display style turns each broad category into a hunt, and search results can’t be counted on to actually display what the user is looking for.

The search problem

One of the Windows Store’s greatest challenges is that it has to serve as the gateway for almost the entirety of the Windows RT experience. With so many apps to choose from, an effective search client is a must. Right now, it’s difficult to tell if the Windows Store is low on certain types of software, or doesn’t understand queries very well. Here’s the result of a search for “Dating.”

There are other problems like this, again, in virtually every category. This is an area where the Store would seriously benefit from a little intelligent search engine integration. Microsoft can’t make other companies produce apps for their software, but the Windows Store could offer to search online with Bing or the default search engine. While this might seem to obviate the point of an app store, it’s a short-term solution that would reduce user confusion. Based on these results, I can’t tell if Windows Search simply doesn’t understand what I’m looking for, or if it there are no apps available. There’s an Adult Friend Finder app (I’m not recommending the service, but it exists) available via the Social category that doesn’t show up here, under either search term.

The reason I suggest a more curated search is that the average end user doesn’t much care about the ins and outs of tablet app strategy. If iPhone and Android devices have pertinent search results and Windows 8 doesn’t, that makes Windows 8 look bad.

Tighten brand restrictions

Some of the problems with the Windows Store are a matter of properly identifying software. Quick — which one of these apps is the official Facebook client?

In our continuing quest to fix and finesse some of Windows 8′s frolicsome foibles, we turn at last to the Start menu — that beloved button that has staked out the bottom left corner of your desktop for almost 20 years, only to be ignominiously removed from Windows 8 and replaced by the desktop-hating Metro Start screen.

Despite Microsoft’s best efforts to ensure that the Start button and menu remain dead, a bunch of third-party replacements have emerged. Really, it just goes to show how devoted the Desktop Windows userbase is: Microsoft completely stripped out the underlying Start menu code to quash potential Luddite revolutionaries, and yet just weeks after the release of Windows 8 there are dozens of Start menu and Start button replacements.

Let’s take a look at the best, cheapest, and most authentic apps for bringing back the Windows Start menu and button.

Classic Shell

Classic Shell is free, open-source donationware that gives you the option of a classic (Windows 98ish), Windows XP, or Vista/7 Start menu. At its most basic, it puts a Start button back on your taskbar — but as always with third-party utilities, it has a ton of other features and settings that you can tweak to your heart’s content (in Classic Shell’s case, there’s probably too many tweakable settings). There is apparently an option for Classic Shell to boot straight to Desktop, but I couldn’t find it.

One strong point of Classic Shell is that it successfully rebinds your Start key, so that the Start menu pops up instead of the new Metro Start screen. Hitting the Start key from Metro pops up Classic Shell, too. Other Start menu replacements don’t usually cope quite so well.

Take care while installing Classic Shell, though: It’s not just a Start menu replacement, and if you’re not careful you will end up installing Classic IE and Classic Explorer, too.

Where Classic Shell tries to replicate the Windows of yesteryear, Pokki (free) is very much its own beast — and as much as I love the Windows 7 Start menu, I have to admit that Pokki is probably even better. It utilizes a neat “pinning” system that isn’t unlike the home screen of your smartphone or tablet (though I would argue that the Windows taskbar/superbar still does a better job). You can also add widgets to Pokki, such as Gmail or Facebook, which display your latest email or status updates.

By default, Pokki will configure your Windows 8 system to boot straight to the Desktop — and there is an option that will just completely disable the hot corners, if you so desire. (Remember, Win+C pops open the Charms menu, if you need.)

Start8

Finally, a commercial offering that will set you back $5: Start8. Start8 is very similar to Classic Shell, but it’s just a little bit smoother. Start8′s configuration interface is much easier to use (and easier on the eyes), and the actual Start menu feels much more like a contiguous part of Windows.

Start8 has a curious option where you can actually have the Metro Start screen pop up as a menu, rather than full-screen (pictured at the top of the story). This is kinda neat, though you’re probably better off sticking to the normal Windows 7-style Start menu replacement.

Like Pokki, Start8 can disable your hot corners and boot directly to Desktop. Start8 also has a bunch of configuration options for how the Start key interacts with Desktop and Metro, which can be useful if you’re looking for a very specific functionality.

How to extract iso files or image files

I think maybe some of you especially the IT technical may know about ISO file. It is an image file which in fact “the image” of entire CD or DVD. It means all contents in CD or DVD can be represented in a single ISO image and it usually come in a big size. 

 

I believe most people always perform burning process to extract the ISO files andsave their contents in CD or DVD. But, I prefer to extract them and save their contents into computer hard disk. It is because I don’t need to spend money tobuy a new CD or DVD when every time the version of the ISO file I downloaded from Internet had been updated by manufacturer.  



What You Need

1. Daemon Tools Lite. Click here to download.

Before The Procedures

First of all, you must install the Daemon Tools Lite in your computer. I had installed it in my Windows Vista computer.

1. Double click to launch the Daemon Tools Lite installer –-> click Continue –-> you will see the interface below. 
   
    
   
2. Click Next –-> click I Agree 
   
    
   
3. Click radio button Free License –-> click Next –-> click Next –-> click Install –-> wait for installation process running  
   
    
   
4. This is an optional step. You can install this gadget if you want but I choose not to install. So, I click Don’t Install 
   
5. Then, you will see the interface below  
   
    
   
6. Click to clear the  sign in both check box –-> click Finish –-> close the web browser appears on your screen.

The Procedures

Now, you have done installing Daemon Tools Lite software. At this second stage, you will begin to extract the ISO file.

1. Double click the Daemon Tools Lite’s icon in your computer desktop. See below 
   
    
   
2. Then, you will see the interface below. Right click on Device 0: [F:] No Media–-> click Mount 
   
    
   
3. The Open textbox like below will pop up on your screen. 
   
    
   
4. Find and click the ISO file you want to extract –-> click Open –-> wait to allowimage to be mounted. 
   
5. Then, you will see the AutoPlay box below –-> click Open folder to view files.

In Windows 8 and Windows 7, when File Explorer is launched via the Task bar shortcut, Libraries are shown by default, which is not useful to us. But If I show the tweak that when you click on File Explorer via the Taskbar then My Computer opens with a drive list. Here is simple tweak to follow.

• Right Click on the File Explorer which is on the Taskbar.

• Then Select Properties, it will open File Explorer Properties.

• Now change the Target Location to the following:
  %SystemRoot%\explorer.exe ,::{20D04FE0-3AEA-1069-A2D8-08002B30309D}
• And click OK, you have done successfully.

3. Customise Default Programs for the Windows 8 Desktop

In Windows, when you click on any image on the desktop then it will not open in Image Viewer or otherwise if you play a video from a desktop then a full screen player emerges out. To avoid all this things we know that we have to set default programs for that. So, here is the simple tweak:

a) Image Viewers

• Click on the Windows Key from your Keyboard, type Default Programs and hit Enter.
  

  
•  Select set your default programs.
  
•  Select Windows Photo Viewer and then click set this program as default.
  

b) Video Players

•  Click on the Windows Key from your Keyboard, type Default Programs and hit Enter.
  
• Select set your default programs.
  
• On right hand side, you will see change program option. Click on that button.

c) PDF Viewer

• Select Associate a file type or protocol with a program.
