Airtel Smart Drive technology

Telecom service provider Bharti Airtel on Wednesday launched a navigation application – SmartDrive – that enables users to view their location on a map and plan the route from one place to another.

“SmartDrive is assisted by a voice based turn by turn navigation that gives real time information updates on traffic situation on roads around,” the company said in a statement.

                                  
SmartDrive offers services such as search for points of interests like restaurants, theatres and shopping malls, and voice navigation. It also offers live traffic information. Currently, it is available in Delhi and NCR, Mumbai and Bangalore and will be made available in Hyderabad, Chennai and Pune by December.

Airtel subscribers can go to www.airtel.in/smartdrive from their mobile and then download the application or SMS smart to 54321 and then click on the link in the message. It is currently available for Android, BlackBerry, Symbian and Windows, with an iOS version to be available soon.

While search and map views are being offered for free, a daily pack for navigation services costs Rs 10, its monthly pack would cost Rs 99. Live traffic services would cost Rs 3 per day while a monthly pack would be for Rs 49. Airtel is offering data browsing free till Nov 30, post which normal data usage charges will apply as per the data pack availed by the customer.

Although widely expected, there was no iPhone 5 in 2011, so it was surely high time for a total revision of the iPhone in 2012. And with an Apple event taking place on September 12, we were expecting to see the iPhone 5 break cover.

A few days ago, Apple finally got round to sending journalists an invite to the launch of its new handset, with the iPhone 5 launch officially pegged for September 12 at 10am PT, 1pm ET, 1900 CEST or 1800 (6pm) BST.

The iPhone 5 offers a larger screen, 4G connectivity and a slightly tweaked design. The new iPhone - the world's thinnest smartphone (or is it?) at 7.6mm (0.3 inches) - is made entirely of glass and aluminium, something Apple says is "unlike anything we, or anyone in the industry, has made before."

In the US, the iPhone 5 is coming to coming to Verizon, AT&T and Sprint, from $199-$399.

IPhone 5 will have nanoSim

By the way, Apple neglected to mention that the new iPhone 5 will come with a nanoSim during the product announcements on September 12.

The smaller SIM card will be up to 40 per cent smaller than previous designs, (12.3 millimeters x 8.8 millimeters) and enables phones to be even thinner than before.

US to get CDMA and GSM

Apple announced on Wednesday that the new iPhone 5 will ship in either a CMDA or GSM model in the US.

This doesn't affect pricing for the new handsets. Right now prices for the iPhone 5 range from $199 to $399, depending on the data.

As for the UK and Germany, these countries are only getting a single GSM model.

How to Defragment your Hard Drive (Windows XP)

What is "fragmenting" and why do I need to "defragment" my hard drive?

Imagine a large library of books arranged in volumes. Also imagine that the librarian for this particular library re-shelves the books in a way which moves the individual books in the volumes further apart from each other. As more books are added to library, the further apart and more mixed up the books in the volumes become. Now imagine that you come to the library and want to check out an entire volume of books. You would have to search all over the library to find each individual book in the volume that you want.  In computer terms, what is happening when the individual books are re-shelved in this way is called fragmenting, and this is what happens to your computer as you install programs, download files, or just use your computer in general. 

When running programs that contains hundreds of files, fragmenting can degrade the performance of your computer. As the clusters of files on your hard drive become fragmented, they grow further apart and it takes longer for your computer to find and assemble all the pieces necessary to run the programs. This is where defragmenting comes in. It rearranges the files on your hard drive so they are back in order, which cuts down on access latency (the time it takes to access your files). It is as if the library has hired a new librarian who goes through and arranges the books so that the volumes are intact and contiguous. This would greatly reduce the time it takes to find whole volumes or individual books in those volumes.

Defragmenting your Windows XP hard drive

1.  To defragment your hard drive in Windows XP, open My Computer and right-click on the C: drive. SelectProperties, then click on the Tools tab and select Defragment Now...

2.  The Windows Disk Defragmenter program will open and all drives are listed in the top window pane.  Since the program is going to be arranging files on your hard drive, it is important that no files are being accessed during the process, or the program won't be able to move them.  Close all open programs. 

3.  The C: drive is where operating system files and programs are installed by default, so make sure that it is selected, then click Defragment. While the program is running, it is recommend that you not use your computer. The time is takes to run the defragmenting process is dependent on the size of your hard drive and amount of fragmentation. 

While the program is running you will see a graphical representation of the blocks of files on your hard drive being moved and the fragmented segments joined together.  Usually the less gaps of free space between the contiguous segments the better, but as long as the fragmented files are put together into contiguous segments, it will help your computer's performance.  

4.  Once the process is complete, the graphic should display most of the contiguous files on the left and the majority of the free space on the right. Close the Disk Defragmenter window and resume using your computer.

Film is not the only thing that will advantage from Blu-Ray technology; I would predict that it will also become the regular for PC and other kinds of storage area space.
